Patmos, a Greek Island with a Religious Past Patmos, one of the smallest inhabited Greek islands is imbued with an intense religious aura. Home to temples since ancient times, Patmos is most famous today for being where St. John the Apostle was banished, where he was inspired with visions he recorded - the Biblical Book of Revelations. A quiet island, Patmos has no discos, no night clubs, no crowds, just incredible beauty and spiritual sanctuary. Patmos, one of the smallest inhabited Greek islands, has long been permeated with an intense religious aura. In ancient times, the island was home to numerous temples. Today there are more than 50 churches and monasteries, an annual sacred musical festival, and an annual celebration at the Cave of the Apocalypse of St. John. Known as Patmos, 'the path,' since eons ago, the island was also referred to as Letois. Letois was for Leto, mother of Artemis, guardian goddess of wilderness and fertility, and her twin brother, Apollo. Supposedly the island owes its existence to Artemis. A site of a temple built in her honor is still visited today, unbeknownst to those on site. On Patmos, legend shares that there were also temples to Zeus, king of the gods, to Apollo, in what is now Fora, to Dionysus, god of wine and revelry, and between the bays of Griko and Petra, there was a temple to Aphrodite. Patmos current fame stems from a later era. After the Crucifixion and Resurrection of Jesus Christ, St. John the Apostle was banished to this island from Ephesus, for preaching the Christian gospel. He retired to a cave where he was blessed with visions. He was instructed to write it all down. These writings became the Biblical Book of Revelations. Pilgrims and worshipers have been coming to visit the grotto for nineteen centuries. In 1088, a monk received permission to build the Monastery of St. John. There is also a Temple of St. John the Apostle and a Temple of the Apocalypse, built near the cave. The Temple of St. John the Apostle was built upon the ancient holy site, the Temple of Artemis. Now, every September 26, a feast is celebrated at the grotto temple. History and religion merge on Patmos. Today Patmos is home to a noted Greek seminary. It is home to the Ecclesiastical Museum. What Patmos doesn't have are discos or nightclubs or crowds of tourists. Patmos is a quiet, peaceful island imbued with respect, wonder and awe and a long, spiritual history. Patmos, an island of poppies, is the northernmost of the Dodecanese Islands. Geologically, earthquakes formed the modern island - a barbell shape, partitioned by a line of mountains. Undulating shores offer offer deep, clear bays along side beaches - perfect for swimming and diving. Visitors also love scuba diving and fishing. Bays merge out into capes overlooking the Aegean Sea. Patmos is surrounded by tiny islands, one even has a church. Patmos lies very near the Turkish coast. It is closest to the Greek islands Leros, Samos and Kalymnos. The rocky island, with an area of 34 square kilometers, 63 km of coastline, a population of 2,500, has an incredible, wild beauty. There are two main communities - Hora, and the Porto Skala.
