Chalki Island Dedecanese Capital city and port is Nimporio or Chalki. It is built in an ampitheatrical style and attracts many tourists. Has been chosen as an international meeting place for young people. Tourist attraction is the church of Ag. Nikolaos, which was built in 1861, with the large bell tower. Old capital of the island was Chorio. Today it is completely uninhabited. Above Chorio there is the Enetic castle that has a beautiful view of Nimporio. Was named Chalki from the copper mines that existed in the area in ancient times. The first inhabitants of the island were Kares, Dorians and Phoenicians. he articles found during excavations show that the city had an important culture and experienced a period of acme in the 10th century B.C. till the 5th century B.C. In the 7th century B.C. it was conquered by the Arabs, who ruled the island till 825 when the Byzantines took over. In 1204 the island was conquered by the Enetoi and Genovezoi. In 1523 they were succeeded by the Turks who ruled till 1912. The Italian rule followed. Finally, in 1948, Chalki became part of Greece CULTURAL ACTIVITIES OF CHALKI "SUMMER FESTIVALS" Young people from all over the world chose Chalki as a 'center of peace and friendship', and they organize many events during the summer. "AUGUST 15TH" August 15th is celebrated in a great way on the island and there is a festival at Nimporio "FESTIVAL OF AG. GIANNI ALARGA" UGUST 29TH Every year there is a large festival in honor of Ag. Gianni Alarga at his monastery, which is 3 hours away by foot from Nimporio. |
