Astypalea Island Dedecanese The name Astypalea was taken from the sister of Europe and mother of Minoas. It was inhabited from the prehistoric years and realised its peak primarily during the Mycenean era. The Romans used it as a launching platform for raids against pirates. The Venetians under Guerini built the castle on the hill of Hora, on the spot where previously had been built the byzantino and possibly the ancient acropolis. In 1540 it was occupied by the Turks and in 1912 by the Italians. It was liberated in 1948. ASTYPALEA TRANSPORTATION From Piraeus there are regular schedules by Ferry boat via the Cyclades. Two churches are built in the interior, Madonna of the Castle and Agios Ioannis. The houses of the castle were three storied. On the south eastern extreme can be found "Serai", the square tower of the castle. Today, dwellings of the castle have been put under preservation. The imposing entrance of the castle, located on the south western side and leading to its interior through a low passage way. The entrance was a place of commercial exchanges. The eight mills of Astypalea are located in the centremost part of Hora, in the central square and on the axis of the Port - Hora - Livadi, which are the most frequented on the island. The mills of Astypalea have a circular floor plan, and their exterior is cylidrical. The roof structure is conical and made with planks and wildwood. The climate of Astypalea is temperate oceanic. The summers are refreshing and pleasant with the renowned "Meltemia" breezes blowing from mid July until mid October. Autumn is warmer than Spring, and the first rains appear just after the "small summer" in mid October. Winter is mild and dry. In Spring the air is filled with the fragrances of nature in bloom. |
